The American Red Cross
In a world full of logos and symbols, some are universally recognizable: the Nike swoosh, the golden arches--and the internationally known sign of caring and security, the Red Cross. With more than 700 chapters across the nation and more than 15 million trained volunteers, the American Red Cross is an undeniable leader in emergency response and humanitarian relief efforts the world over.

The recent devastation suffered after a massive earthquake on the island nation of Haiti is no exception. In the week following the disaster, the Red Cross has sent roughly 100 tons of food, water and supplies--as well as hundreds of volunteers, hospitals, relief stations and water purification and delivery programs -- to Haiti, with even more needed.

Led by volunteers, the local Dayton Area Chapter responds

to over 200 local disaster incidents each year.  In addition, whether it is tornados, hurricanes, Midwest flooding, California wildfires, power outages, or massive winter storms, the Dayton Chapter is called upon to send trained volunteers and workers to the national scene to usually more than just one disaster at the same time. The chapter  helps by raising money and helping loved ones connect after being separated or missing during large national and international disasters.

The local chapter trains over 25,000 people each year in life-saving skills such as CPR, First Aid, Life Guarding, Swimming, Babysitting and Wilderness First Aid.  Additionally, the Dayton Chapter is a state certified training site for First Responders.  The chapter takes serious the mission of teaching people and businesses to be prepared in case of an emergency.  Last year, the chapter participated in health fairs and gave preparedness talks to over 60 businesses and organizations.  The Red Cross also assists military families in locating their troop member during crises to include bringing them home for family emergencies.
